How to Buy a Used Car: The Complete Checklist
Everything to check before you buy a second-hand car — paperwork, history, the test drive and how to negotiate.
Buying a used car privately can save you thousands, but only if you do your homework. Use this checklist before you hand over any money.
Before you view the car
- Check the MOT history and mileage online using the registration.
- Run a history check for outstanding finance, write-offs and stolen markers.
- Confirm the seller's name matches the V5C logbook address.
At the viewing
- View in daylight and dry weather — rain hides paint and panel problems.
- Check panel gaps, look for overspray and mismatched paint.
- Cold-start the engine yourself; listen for rattles and watch for smoke.
- Test every electrical item: windows, aircon, infotainment, cameras.
- Inspect tyres (including the spare) and look for uneven wear.
The test drive
Drive for at least 15 minutes on varied roads. Check the brakes pull up straight, the gearbox is smooth, the clutch bites cleanly and the steering doesn't vibrate.
Paperwork and payment
- V5C logbook, service history, MOT certificates and receipts for major work.
- Two keys where possible.
- Pay by bank transfer and get a signed receipt with both parties' details.
Negotiating
Use any faults you found as leverage. Know the market price from comparable local listings and be ready to walk away.
