This early 20th century hand carved/hand painted on pine, Noah’s Ark is such a delight. It’s roof lifts off so that the animals can be stored inside the ark, but it has been cleverly designed by having a hinged section attached by leather to the stable part of the roof.

This handmade ark and the animals were made between 1918-1923 in Stoke Newinton in North London by the “War Relief Toy Works” which was formed by injured soldiers returning from World War 1, and the money they raised from the sale of these arks were used to rehabilitate the disabled soldiers.

For children, the Noah’s Ark was an allowed toy for play on Sundays because the story is from the Bible.

The ark is in good original condition. The paint has been a bit worn off in various places, but then that is not surprising as it was a child’s toy. So the wear and tear is commensurate with its age and use. You can see from my photos the condition of the ark. Basically it is sturdy and in good condition and the overall paintwork is still in good, presentable condition. The gothic windows are in keeping with a traditional church.

There are 23 hand carved animals, all able to stand and in good condition. Most are in pairs but some are missing their mates. The animals consist of:

2 ostriches

2 bears

2 sheep

2 goats

2 camel

2 zebra

2 horses

2 oxen

3 lions (2 males, 1 female)

1 elephant,

1 swan

1 duck

1 piglet

There is no Noah or Mrs. Noah

The ramp is a replacement ramp, but works nicely for the animals.

The measurements are: 23″ long, 13″ high and 6 1/2″ deep

This makes a wonderful toy for children who are supervised, as well as a delightful display item. It is true Folk Art.
